"Literary Love at Camelot"

Sunday Times, Aug. 22, 2004

by Mark Keenan

(a passage from the article) — The famous Irish writer Ernest Gebler stood at the entrance to his castle — Lakepark House at Roundwood — with his friend, the author JP Donleavy. The pair faced down a “posse” of beefy rugby players led by an angry father who was determined to seize back his errant daughter from Gebler.

The wide-eyed damsel was the 20-year-old Edna O’Brien. Years before she outraged Ireland with her shocking Country Girls trilogy, she incensed her own family by eloping with Gebler, then a fortysomething divorced communist.

Recalling the fearsome stand-off with O’Brien’s father, Donleavy wrote: “We had a pretty violent fight. There were seven of them — her family and Dublin rugby players they had recruited. “There were just the two of us, but Gebler was a tough, strong individual and I had a fierce reputation. We gave them a lesson in good manners.”
